MoD reader Dick Vaughan writes in with an update on the situation between LEGO® and the Maori-speaking tribes of New Zealand. If you haven’t heard about this, the tribes had heard that LEGO® was trademarking words from their language and, understandably, wanted to put a stop to it. I’ve never actually found any proof that LEGO® actually ever intended to do this, but a lot of the names do come from the Maori language. Currently, however, the only word in the entire line that has been trademarked is BIONICLE™, which isn’t at all tied to the Maori language. Oh yeah, that update you were looking for? Well, this is it.
