These pieces of concept art by BIONICLE co-creator Christian Faber are entitled Mahri Transport Vehicle / Redesign and Mahri Transport Vehicle / Transport Chamber Details. Both were given more detailed renders by Ghost VFX and represent the Toa Terrain Crawler as seen in the BIONICLE: Toa Mahri short that was released in 2007.
The Toa Terrain Crawler, or “Mahri Transport Vehicle” as it’s referred to in the concept art, was a key piece of the 2007 iconography.
The artwork gives a cross section of the central portion of the vehicle to show how the two interior locations seen in the animation fit together. Sadly no views of the cockpit or rear hanger, but they weren’t seen in the short that’s something that could be expected.
It is interesting that each of the Toa is given a specific location, not just in terms of seating but also in how they’d stand at the port. The interior design gives better insight into where all the equipment was stored, lining up with what we saw glimpses of in Toa Mahri.
The renders cement the design, incorporating aspects of the set such as the bladed legs and the cockpit tendrils, but rearranging them for a smoother look. It looks more like a submarine than a crawler now, far sleeker in movement and appearance.
