The artist’s rendition of this Toa of Air, with its muted background serving to frame the subject in a way that’s somewhere between the dramatic and the minimalist, combines a Biomech surrealism with more explicit elements of the Transhumanist aesthetic.

One could imagine this reconceptualization of Lewa as a more androgynous and mechanical — but simultaneously more creatural — being as something that has undergone, and continues to undergo, some form of directed evolution. Where would this process of transformation lead? A fascinating question raised by a fascinating piece of art.
