MOC: Kirikori Nui

This is a creation by Chuck Nofel

These ravenous herbivorous Rahi are the scourge of farmers everywhere. Kirikori Nui create huge communal nests buried deep in the soil, where they return after feasting on every bit of vegetation they can find. Unlike other Rahi, their granules do not transform immediately, instead waiting until it reaches a critical mass to unleash an entire fresh swarm. With their ridiculous speed and sharp mandibles, they team up to defend their nest from predators. Thankfully, they have relatively short lifespans, preventing too many swarms from being active at once.

This reimagining of the cannonized MOC would look right at home next to the official Rahi sets, the only giveaway being some newer technic pieces not available when the original sets were released. I can easily imagine these zipping across the ground, lifting up their front feet and kicking with the large rear legs to zip along with the wheels on their bellies.

I couldn’t offer any constructive criticism to make it look better, however, I have an idea for a play function. I think with the right parts, it wouldn’t be too hard to add a pull back motor, maybe disguised as it’s abdomen. With a second Kirikori Nui, kids could battle by launching them into eachother to try and knock the mask off its opponent’s head.

Chuck is “currently working on a Re-Imagining of the Bionicle Storyline” and notes there are intentional differences between the description of his creations and the cannon storyline. I highly recommend checking out more of his work, as Chuck has been very busy with this project. Kirikori is actually one of his simpler redesigns, and it belies the complexity and innovation of his usual creations.
