MOC: The Beach Scene

This is a MOC by Kumata

Put together a small BIONICLE scene for the show using the recent GWP models. It’s a bit rushed so I will rework it and expand the scene – I want to have a longer beach and add the telescope/sand circle.

Though Kumata was in a rush to get this ready to display at a LEGO show, they still managed to make a fun display. The build seems simple at first, blue for water waves, tan for sand, and gray bricks for the background wall. Kumata adds to the detail with a few tricks like darker tan between the water and lighter tan on the shore to emulate wet sand where the waves have retracted. A highly detailed stone face statue contrasts with the background while the canister and lid dominate the scene and add depth to the foreground. Billowing smoke rises and curves back from a smoldering trail behind Tahu.

If I were to add constructive criticism, I’d like to see some transparent clear bricks behind the smoldering trail, to emulate the sand being turned into glass from the heat. In addition to expanding the display to add the telescope and circle, I wonder if Kumata could build a platform out from the rock wall and use forced perspective to add some tiny background details like a small Matoran village.

You can find more of Kumata’s work on Twitter and DeviantArt. Most of their LEGO creations are trains and scenes from iconic videogames like Sonic and Crash Bandicoot. They are also an excellent artist (who takes commissions) featuring art from many games and toy franchises. Kumata’s style really captures the detail of the BIONICLE toys while also depicting them as living characters.
