When I learned about the fan vote to decide the theme for The LEGO Group’s 90th anniversary set, my vote was of course cast for BIONICLE. This was not just because it’s my favorite theme, but because the timing was perfectly aligned with the theme’s 20th anniversary, and leaves the way clear for The LEGO Group to celebrate their 100th anniversary with one of it’s founding themes. It also felt like the perfect send-off for the theme that ultimately saved the company from bankruptcy.
While we have yet to learn who won the final vote, many of us had to question if the set could be a true BIONCILE set. It would have to appeal to the larger LEGO fanbase, and that would likely mean a set comprising mostly of standard bricks. That is not necessarily a bad thing, as it creates the opportunity for something very unique and special that we never got with the theme. I imagined something akin to an Ultimate Collectors Series set depicting something in the kind of detail the typical BIONICLE system was not particularly suited for.
Bretts Lego Nerdvana‘s MOC, “The Great Spirit Robot”, envisions everything I am hoping for, and you can see the creation in all it’s glory in this video:
But don’t just stop at this video, Brett’s youtube channel also shows off the individual segments of this creation, as well as some impressive LEGO Transformers MOCs.
