MOC: The Thing

Dead Space is one of my favorite games, featuring monsters that are typically comprised of dead bodies twisted and weaponized to make more dead bodies. I can typically run through the game unfazed by the violent monsters, at best startled by a jump-scare (and we all know those are cheating). Sean Mathews‘ MOC is not based on Dead Space. It’s based on Stephen King’s “The Thing“, which features monsters that similarly warp their victims into predatory abominations.

Although I could probably tolerate the book, and certainly had no issue with watching my sibling play through the game (Considered a cannon sequel to the book by the way), you could not pay me to watch the movies.

Re-envisioned in BIONICLE parts, Sean Mathews’ MOC is nowhere near as grotesque or visceral. However, it shows some very creative use of parts. and building techniques. The video even starts out with a few broken-down views to giver you a better idea of it’s construction. The colorscheme even takes on an interesting purpose, blending in the Darth Maul head. The sith lord’s natural skin colors and head spikes serve to better portray a bloody and mutated former-human.

If you want to see more of Sean Mathews’ work, you can find their youtube channel here. You might have to scroll a bit through some gameplay videos, however you will not be disappointed. There are many more MOCs featuring similar and greater levels of detail. If you like horror, you can even find a Sirenhead and Vecna MOC, although his revamps of BIONICLE characters like Makuta and Gadunka aren’t bad either.
