Ever wanted to read the full, complete, canonical 2001 ending that seamlessly integrates the games, book, and lore? We’ve got you covered!
Over the next three weeks, M&L will release a collection of chapters that substitute for the final chapters of BIONICLE Chronicles 1: Tales of the Toa! Combining pieces of the original Tales of the Toa (as well as pieces from the original draft), the M&L novelization of the MNOG Walkthrough, the Legend of Mata Nui game, the BIONICLE Synopsis, and our own original material, we have created a seamless experience to enjoy the final chapter of 2001.
Today’s segment, the first of three, deals with the arrival of the Toa (and Matoran) at the Temple, Kini-Nui. Integrating the MNOG scene with BC1, altering the dialogue styles of the former to match the latter, and adding description of the Temple, this is the most straightforward chapter to alter. But stay tuned for the revised Manas and Shadow Toa fights!

Very good material! This should have been used in place of the final chapters in the book. I particularly like the buildup to Makuta and the different “tests” they must pass. I’m a fan of MNOG, and thus I like how blended and transitive this all is. I, however, have two critiques.
The first concerns voice. Having just read the first four books, there’s a lot of third person thought and emotion intermixed from the perspective of all the toa. While adding MNOG’s dialogue and story is best, yet all that is added is the conversations, some descriptions, and transitive text of the story. Without the thoughts and feelings from each toa as well, it stood out a bit from the original author’s voice and flow of thought.
My second critique is about the Shadow Toa. While I really like how the story was presented with a nod to both sides (absorbing the dark part of themselves and the defeating each other’s counterparts), yet the description was rushed and abruptly stated toward the end. It was almost confusing. A little more build up and description would have been nice, such as distinguishing the “shell” of the shadow toa versus their shadowy spirits. Perhaps as each battle wages, the shadow toa grow stronger as they draw more of the toa’s dark spirits from them into a concentrated form? And then they could fight back with their goodness, tenacity, and counter to everything evil inside themselves, fully embracing, overcoming, and drawing them back in. After that, their “shells” are still powerful, and from there they must then fight like a team to win.
Beyond suggesting the actual scene with Makuta’s tentacles and vortex be a little longer, descriptive, and intense as the grand finale showdown, these rewritten chapters were amazing, inventive, creatively fun, and a far more satisfying conclusion to the original ending. Great job! Keep up the good work. Five stars indeed, and I’m already posting links on my own media.
This is great feedback! May honestly take another crack at this sometime down the line with these thoughts in mind. There are definitely a few of these adaptations where we’ve been torn about the degree to which we should add our own original ideas and content, but I think leaning much more into the fanon aspects would go a long way to establishing cohesion and making the story that much more satisfying.
Thanks again! Hope to hear your thoughts on other stories down the line!
Why didn’t you put links here? Only the logo has that.
There’s a link to the story at the bottom of the post, if that’s what you’re looking for. Otherwise, I’m not sure what you mean.
