One year ago today, the Myths and Legacy site went live.
The Past
As a project that had sprouted out of the Custom BIONICLE Wiki years ago, by the time Myths and Legacy created its site, it had collaborated with different fan projects and writers and accumulated two years’ worth of writings and ideas. But it wasn’t until the project began collaborating with the heads of Wall of History and MaskOfDestiny that it truly rose to the next level.
When the site went live, it hosted six sections on the main page. In the months that followed, four were steadily unlocked, and some developed beyond their original intents. The first section to be unlocked was for Myths and Legacy originals. This was soon followed with a section for general fan content, one for uncanonized winners of the BZPower and Kanohi Journal writing contests, and one for the Vision of the Great Beings/”ultimate serial experience” project. However, two sections remained locked.
After rereleasing every story that had been released already by the Myths and Legacy project or affiliated writers, Myths and Legacy quickly moved on to releasing and advertising new original content. Nearly every week for this past year, new content was published and/or promoted. Stories published on the site included:
- Out of Their Elements by Nicrophorus
- Relevance by BobTheDoctor27
- Understanding by Jeff Douglas
- Remnants and Rejects by Jeff Douglas
- Old War Rahi by Jeff Douglas
- Mazeka by Jeff Douglas
- Light on the Dunes by Sigma, JSLBrowning, and Jeff Douglas for Vision of the Great Beings
- Reign of Shadows: The Untold Stories by Nicrophorus
- Invasion by Jeff Douglas
In addition, within our general fan content site, the works of Peri Animates Things, ArcAngelofJustice, Crosswired Geeks, and Minirigby found a new home.
Finally, the Litestone section of the site was expanded late last year to host the “Ultimate BIONICLE Serial Reading Experience” – or the BIONICLE Destinies – to help people fans new and old engage with the BIONICLE serials. The winding knot of 2008 literature has been unwound, and with it has been integrated the M&L works that build and expand upon the foundations laid in the canon. Now the BIONICLE Destinies are the easiest and most accessible way to get up to speed as Vision of the Great Beings makes its debut.
Now as we launch into the second year of our site, we look forward to the projects still to come.
The Future
We have so much more in store, much of which will continue to build off of what we have done this first year.
Firstly, this anniversary finds us in the middle of the release for BIONICLE Legends: Invasion which will be wrapping up in about a month. Following its conclusion, we will release two more original stories following canonical events that each branch out of Invasion. The first of these, titled Heart of Metru Nui will follow the Matoran of Metru Nui as they grapple with the Turaga’s continued secrets… all the more when one of these secrets threatens to destroy their very city. It’s a love letter to MNOG and concludes many of the themes and arcs established in the Templar series.
The second, titled Annals of Icarax, is an autobiographical account as Icarax documents his exploits during 2007 when he’s roving around the universe wreaking mayhem. The story serves as a missing fourth 2007 story serial and rounds out the events transpiring at this time.
Once that is complete, we will release the definitive 2007 serials experience, featuring a complete 2007 serial readthrough and a third-person rewrite of the Toa Nuva Blog and Annals of Icarax. With this finished, we will turn our attention to the heretofore unknown 2006 story serials, Legacy Weapons, The Powers That Be, and The Yesterday Quest all of which round out the major story arcs of the BIONICLE Destinies. The latter two of these are very far along, but we don’t want to release them until they are as refined and polished as we can get them.
On top of these, we have dozens of further stories still in the works, yet to be unveiled or released. Stories spanning from the earliest days in history to beyond the known story. All of these and more, we are excited to reveal in the weeks and months to come.
Moreover, we have been in talks with a handful of authors interested in bringing their works to our independent section. As always, if you or anyone you know has canon compliant material that could fit on our site, be sure to reach out and let us know.
And… The Present
So far, we have recounted the places this project has been, and we have given glimpses into what’s in store. But as a gift to all who have followed us for this past year – and who have yet to learn about us – we have released one thing today.
As alluded to in the beginning of this post, of the six sections that remained sealed, only four have been unlocked… until now.
Starting today, the Myths and Legacy site will host novelizations of BIONICLE comics, animations, games, movie scenes, Level 3 readers, and more. Today alone we have added novelizations of all the comics set during the Mata Nui and Ignition eras. Once Invasion, Heart of Metru Nui, and Annals of Icarax have wrapped, we will begin regular releases of even more novelized content including the Glatorian comics, Templar animations, the Journey of Takanuva, Peri’s animations, the canon games from 2001-2003, and others. All of these will be divided first according to the major story arc (Mata Nui, Metru Nui, Ignition, and Bara Magna) they’re part of, then according to their medium.
None of this could have been done without the help of Michael Larson (also known as “Makuta Mutran,” whose emblem decorates the section) who originally sat down to transcribe these stories. It’s off of the foundations he laid that we continue to build.
Although prose versions of scenes we saw in other media certainly aren’t “original content,” we hope you enjoy reliving these moments from the comics.
Of course, not all of this is familiar material. As a fanon site, we have added Easter Eggs and new scenes here and there that supplement the original content and expand on the themes of the original stories.
As with all content produced by M&L on MnL, you are welcome to use these in your own work, though we do ask for credit where applicable.
The End… but Never The End
It’s been an exciting year to spend with you, and with all that’s happened last year alone, it’s definitely been one for the books.
We hope that you continue to enjoy the Myths and Legacy project, and as our community and our scope continues to grow and expand, we look forward to providing more quality BIONICLE content.
If you haven’t already joined our community on Discord, we encourage you to hang out with us there.
And for all the latest news on our project, follow us here on MaskOfDestiny or over on Twitter.
Thanks again for all your support. We couldn’t have made it this far without you.
