New Augmented Reality LEGO Sets

According to Engadget, The LEGO Group is making a new augmented reality theme called Vidiyo. Much like the Hidden Side theme, kids use a phone to scan minifigures and props, which are then brought to life in the application. Specific tiles also act to add visual effects to the app when scanned. Players can then choose from the included music to create music video clips, and even upload them to a moderated site to share.

The LEGO Group has been making use of augmented reality for a while now. The first time I saw it used was in a kiosk with a camera in select LEGO stores, which scanned LEGO sets and projected the complete model on top of the box in the kiosk’s screen. You could then rotate the box in front of the camera to see the model from various angles on the screen.

My favorite use so far, was using it to scan Nexo Knight shield plates, allowing players to enable the respective shield powers in the game. Come to think…why didn’t they use the technology on BIONICLE masks in G2? They probably could have used it in a modern day Mata Nui Online game, akin to skylanders.
