Random Thoughts II: TECHNIC-ally Speaking

My apologies to Dimensioneer who posted the following observation (in his BAHRAG review) after I noticed it but before I posted it:

2002 BIONICLE™ is no longer a sub-brand of TECHNIC®. All of the 2001 BIONICLE is labelled “LEGO® TECHNIC BIONICLE™”, but the brand-name “TECHNIC” is nowhere to be found on the packaging of the BOHROK, BOXOR, et al . Unlike the demise of the DUPLO brand and the PRIMO brand before it, the TECHNIC brand will probably continue to hang around for years to come; it has only parted ways with BIONICLE. I think this break is a reflection of the strength of the BIONICLE brand more than anything else.

NOTE: It’s a little more complicated than that. The new Darth Vader and R2-D2 sets, while built with TECHNIC® parts, do not sport the TECHNIC® logo anywhere either, though they are listed with the logo in the 2002 LEGO® Product Book that I received at Toy Fair. Also of note is that the 2001 McD’s MATORAN sets are missing the TECHNIC® logo as well. It still remains to be seen if the upcoming 8400 series Racers will be the only officially branded TECHNIC® sets of 2002. -PD
