While we’ve seen this design before, anyone who started buying after October 2001 would probably have to buy the 10023 Masterbuilder set to get instructions for this model.
While the mostly orange with dark-grey accents color scheme works a lot better than mostly dark-grey with orange accents, it just doesn’t seem right for a spider. The mostly black version seen in the LEGO® Mania Magazine and the TRU promo CD-ROM from October 2001 is much more appropriate looking.
I love the design of this model. It’s a very solidly built, playable creature that’s also a very good starting point for small exo-skeletal critters. Granted, it doesn’t actually do anything but move its head a bit, but there really need to be at least a few things on MATA NUI that are smaller than the MATORANS.
The other nice thing is that with there being four different colors of ONUA’s claw, eleven different colors of PAKARI, eight different colors of TOA head, and at least fourteen different colors of hip-joints, the number of color combinations that can be made without even changing the physical design are rather impressive. And if you start using other KANOHI (or even KRANA), the possibilities increase exponentially.
