The LEGO Company is getting ready to celebrate their 90th anniversary, and they would like fans to vote on a particular theme to represent in the form of a 90th anniversary set.

They have selected 30 classic themes, including our personal favorite, BIONICLE, to vote on. An initial vote running until the 25th of January 2021 will give each participating fan 3 votes to cast, one vote per theme, so choose your top three!

The initial vote will narrow the choices down, and a second vote will lead up to a surprise reveal of the theme that will represent the 90th anniversary.

Now, obviously, I would heartily encourage you to vote on BIONICLE as one of your three choices. I would also argue it is the best choice to represent the 90th anniversary, and not just because we’re a site dedicated to the BIONICLE theme. Allow me to present my case.

BIONICLE is widely celebrated for having saved the LEGO Group from bankruptcy. At the turn of the millennium they found themselves over-expanded, losing the attention of the market they needed to survive — in short, they found themselves in serious trouble. Then, in 2001, they launched the BIONICLE theme. It was an overnight success. It singlehandedly secured the revenue the LEGO Group needed to maintain their ground while they reworked their policies and transformed into a sustainable business again. If not for our favorite theme, the LEGO Group might not have survived to reach this 90th anniversary celebration. But they did survive, and are thriving — they’re a household name and a multimedia brand, producing movies, video games, and even television now alongside their variegated sets and themes, both licensed and original.

Additionally, it is now BIONICLE’s 20th anniversary. Fans all over the world are coming together and celebrating the theme. We never got the full 20 years that the LEGO Group originally allotted to it, so this seems like the perfect moment for us to spread the word across the BIONICLE fan community to participate in the vote.

Perhaps we can get a BIONICLE set released in 2021, its originally intended year of retirement, after all!
